Council Bluffs Educators Honor Rep. Josh Turek at Abraham Lincoln High
Over 100 educators, parents, students, and community members filled the Abraham Lincoln High School gym last week to honor Iowa State Rep. Josh Turek. Hosted by Council Bluffs Educators, a collaborative group with Iowans for Decency, the event celebrated Turek’s achievements, character, and impact on his hometown.
Cutting through the noise of campaign season, the evening focused on personal connections and shared values. Retired teachers who knew Josh as a young student took the stage, sharing memories of his school days and reflecting on the lessons and values they worked to instill in him—values now reflected in his public service. Mrs. Joann Allmon, Josh’s fifth-grade homeroom teacher, recalled his remarkable ability to make friends quickly, his work ethic, and the character that has defined him from a young age.
The formal letter of endorsement, signed by 50 retired educators from the Council Bluffs area, was a centerpiece of the evening. It was presented to Josh’s father by former superintendent Dr. Dick Christie, who also handed Josh his high school diploma years ago. The moment was both touching and symbolic, representing the powerful connection between generations of educators and their students.
Linda Nelson, chair of the Council Bluffs Educators with Iowans for Decency, spoke about watching Josh grow from a student into a public servant dedicated to making life better for others. “As educators, there is no greater reward than seeing a former student take the lessons, opportunities, and encouragement he received and use them to serve the community,” Nelson said.
A moving letter from Coach Bruce Chubick was read aloud, capturing the community’s pride and hope for Josh’s future. “Josh, when you get to D.C. you will be sort of a novelty. A non-wealthy, honest politician. D.C. will be a kinder, more civil place with you in office.
The message that I have for you upon your election: GO STOP THE CHAOS! Good luck!” the coach wrote.
Many students with physical and learning challenges attended, honoring their teachers and cheering for Josh, who continues to serve as a role model for all.
As a member of the Iowa House, Josh sponsored 99 House bills that focused on public education, health care, disability rights, and support for veterans and working families. Speakers highlighted his legislative career, emphasizing how his work continues to reflect the core values of Iowa’s educators.
The evening’s atmosphere transcended party lines. Whether Independent, Republican, or Democrat, the Council Bluffs community came together—proud and supportive of their favorite son.
The gym where Turek once practiced basketball offered a meaningful backdrop for reflecting on the influence of public education and the teachers who shape future leaders. Attendees left inspired by the stories shared and united in their support for Josh Turek, Iowa's next junior senator!
